]]>
Bagamoyo is known for the desecration of the human race that occurred many years ago in this Swahili Coast town due to the heinous slave trade. In spite of this unpleasant history, today, Bagamoyo is one of the most wondrous tourist destinations for practically any person who wishes to spend a vacation or just to relax for the weekend or any particular day
DAR HOTEL– BAGAMOYO
On the Second day you will be picked up by our driver guide and depart for Bagamoyo in the morning to visit the following attractions listed below
KAOLE RUINS
These include the remains of a mosque from the 13th century and gravestones estimated dating back from the 15th century. The mosque is one of the oldest in mainland Tanzania and one of the oldest in East Africa. Kaole was an important Arabic trading post long before Bagamoyo had assumed any significance.
THE FIRST POST OFFICE IN EAST AFRICA
La Renaissance is a more modern hotel, fashioned from the renovated post office building. The name Old Post Office literally refers to East Africa’s FIRST post office under German colonial rule (Deutsche OstAfrika). It has been called “La Renaissance” to signify the “rebirth” of the old post office into a new luxurious hotel.
GERMAN HOUSE/MUSEUM
As Bagamoyo was the capital of German East Africa, the Germans had built the German Boma which was during the colonial era the administrative offices. Today this house has been turned into a museum due to its long history. Near the German boma was the first German school that was built in 1897. Also near the German house is the German cemetery and also what used to be the Germans Hanging ground for those who revolted against the German occupation in Tanzania.
HOLY GHOST CATHOLIC CHURCH
The church is located just within Bagamoyo Town. The church has an excellent museum with a lot of history about Bagamoyo from the time the first missionaries arrived in Tanzania. The church is one of the oldest churches in the mainland of East Africa. In the same church there is a chapel where the body of Dr. Livingstone was kept after being transported for 1500km on foot from Kigoma before being taken to burial at Westminister Abbey in Europe
BAGAMOYO STONE TOWN
MjiMkongwe was the other name used for the Bagamoyo stone town. The stone town is situated along ocean road. The old building are still standing firm though some have been renovated. In the stone town you will find the Liku house which served as the German administrative headquarters. Also around the stone town is the German customs house built in 1895 near what was the Bagamoyo fort. Still in the stone town we have small several streets lined with carved doors similar to those found in stone town in Zanzibar.
