Short safaris · من Dar es Salaam
Bagamoyo has played many historical roles in Tanzania. Apart from being a slave and ivory port, it was a German headquarters in 1891. Explorers such as Burton, Speke, Grant, Livingstone and Stanley all passed through the town.
The name Bagamoyo comes from the Swahili words 'bwaga moyo', meaning 'throw down your heart', the despair of people captured as slaves, who knew they faced an uncertain future.
On this overnight trip from Dar es Salaam, you see the Kaole Ruins and the town's historical sites, and spend a morning on the beach.
