Überblick

The Machame route is probably the most beautiful way up Kilimanjaro. It is normally completed in a minimum of 6 days and 5 nights on the mountain.

From Machame Gate the trail climbs through rainforest to the heather and moorland of the Shira Ridge, passes Lava Tower and drops into the Great Barranco Valley. It then climbs the Barranco Wall to Barafu Camp, the base for the midnight climb to Uhuru Peak, and comes down by Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate.

Tag für Tag

  1. Tag 1

    Arrival and transfer to Moshi

Pickup from Arusha town or Kilimanjaro International Airport, and transfer to Moshi, known as the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro.

Overnight at a base hotel in Moshi, on half board.

  2. Tag 2

    Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Transfer to Machame Gate (1,815 m, 5,950 ft) and begin your climb of Mount Kilimanjaro on the Machame Route.

After the entry formalities, walk through the mist on a 4x4 track for about an hour into the forest. Where the track ends, the trail continues up through dripping, verdant forest.

You will likely hear many exotic birds in the canopy above, and may even see black-and-white colobus and Sykes monkeys.

The trek is quite long (20 km, 12 miles) but not very steep, and takes 5 to 7 hours.

Machame Camp is just above the forest, in the heather zone. When it is clear, there are views of the jagged Shira ridge and the summit itself. Overnight at Machame Camp (3,000 m, 9,850 ft).

  3. Tag 3

    Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Wake early to a steaming cup of tea or coffee in your tent. After breakfast, climb the steep track through a savannah of tall grasses and trees of giant heather and erica.

The clouds should clear for a beautiful view of the Western Breach and the glaciers above it that mark the summit, Uhuru Peak.

Scramble around large boulders into the moorland zone, with its bizarre lobelia and senecio plants, and volcanic rocks draped with lichen beards that shelter wild alpine flowers at their bases.

Descend into a small valley, cross a brook and climb onto the Shira Ridge to reach camp, after about 4 to 5 hours of trekking. Overnight at Shira Camp (3,840 m, 12,600 ft).

  4. Tag 4

Lava Tower and the Barranco Valley

Climb steadily over long ridgelines of high desert for about 4 hours, and stop for lunch at about 4,420 m (14,500 ft).

After lunch, continue to Lava Tower, a 300-foot volcanic plug that marks an exposed pass at 4,600 m (15,000 ft).

In the afternoon, descend the steep track into the Great Barranco Valley.

Barranco Camp sits on a col, a flat area enclosed on three sides by steep valley walls and the Kibo massif itself.

Hanging glaciers glint in the sunshine above, over an eerie landscape of giant groundsels (Senecio kilimanjari) and the endemic giant lobelia. Trekking time is 6 to 7 hours.

Overnight at Barranco Camp (3,950 m, 12,950 ft).

  5. Tag 5

    Barranco Wall to Barafu Camp

The day begins with a scramble up the steep Barranco Wall. Trek for 3 to 4 hours, then stop in the Karanga Valley for a hot lunch.

In the afternoon the trail turns steadily uphill. It grows colder and the landscape sparser as you near Barafu Camp, set on a small, exposed flat area on a ridge.

This is the base camp for your summit attempt, which starts at midnight tonight.

Eat and drink as much as you can before you go to your tent to rest and sleep. Overnight at Barafu Camp (4,630 m, 15,200 ft).

  6. Tag 6

Summit day: Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp

A steaming hot drink arrives very early on this momentous day. The wake-up call is at midnight, you start trekking between 00:30 and 01:00, and the day holds 12 to 17 hours of trekking.

Temperatures range from just below freezing at midnight to between -12°C (10°F) and -23°C (-10°F) just before dawn at the summit.

At early dawn the winding path of endless switchbacks takes shape in the shadows of the Ratzel and Rebmann glaciers, and behind you the spires of Mawenzi are silhouetted against the red glow of the sun beneath the clouds.

After about 6 hours of walking you reach the edge of the crater at Stella Point (5,790 m, 19,000 ft), the end of the steep track. From here, a gentle slope leads up in about 1 hour to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m, 19,340 ft).

After a short time at the summit, descend the steep scree trail back to Barafu Camp for some rest, then summon your strength again for the descent to Mweka Camp. Overnight at Mweka Camp (3,110 m, 10,200 ft).

  7. Tag 7

Down to Mweka Gate and back to Moshi

Descend straight from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,830 m, 6,000 ft), 2 to 3 hours.

At the gate you have lunch and receive your climbing certificate.

Transfer back to a base hotel in Moshi for dinner and overnight.

  8. Tag 8

    Transfer to Arusha

After breakfast, transfer back to Arusha town, where the trip ends.
