Kilimanjaro climbs · da Kilimanjaro
The Umbwe route climbs Kilimanjaro from the south. It is a classic six-day climb on the mountain, and by far the most difficult route offered on Kilimanjaro: the first two days of the trek are extremely steep, muddy and strenuous.
Through montane forest and up a narrow ridge, the trail reaches the Barranco Valley, then crosses the Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley and Barafu, the base for the night climb to Uhuru Peak. The way down follows the same trail as the Mweka Route.

Pickup from Arusha town or Kilimanjaro International Airport, and transfer to Moshi, known as the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro.
Overnight at a base hotel in Moshi, on half board.
Most of today's hike, 8 km and 6 to 7 hours, is through montane forest.
Lush vegetation, very old trees and lots of ferns and mosses show that this area gets reliable rain all year round. The forest abounds with wildlife: small bushbuck, duikers and monkeys, and rich and varied birdlife.
The first three hours or so are on gently rising ground, and the last two hours are steeper.
The camp for the night is in a small clearing on the trail. Overnight at Umbwe Cave Camp (2,940 m).
Hike 8 km from Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp (3,860 m), 6 to 7 hours, up into alpine desert.
Soon after you set off, the forest gives way to giant heath. The trail follows a ridge, which narrows and sharpens as it climbs through the heath until it becomes a knife edge, with steep drops on each side.
As the heath grows lower, there are stunning views of Kilimanjaro's southern flank and across to Mount Meru, some 50 miles away. The wildlife changes with the vegetation: you may hear jackals barking and see the huge lammergeier circling overhead.
Overnight at Barranco Camp, which overlooks the Barranco Valley, with views up towards the Arrow Glacier.
Hike 7 km from Barranco Camp (3,860 m) to Karanga Camp (4,000 m), about 4 hours in alpine desert.
Your first challenge of the day is the Barranco Wall, across the stream on the eastern side of the valley: a 950-foot barrier of volcanic rock. Although it is tall and looks steep, it is very easy to climb, and the views from the wall are magnificent.
Spend the rest of the day skirting the base of Kibo peak, over your left shoulder, then descend into the Karanga Valley.
Overnight at Karanga Camp, resting before the tough climb up to Barafu.
Hike 7 km from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,600 m), about 6 hours in alpine desert.
From Karanga, head slowly up a moraine ridge. The views here can be spectacular, of the southern glaciers and the glacial valleys that snake their way down the mountain.
The final stretch to Barafu is quite steep, and as always you take it very slowly.
As on the day before, you reach camp around lunchtime, with lots of time to prepare and relax.
In the evening your guide briefs you for the final ascent. Overnight at Barafu Camp.
Climb from Barafu Camp (4,600 m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), then descend to Mweka Camp (3,100 m): 7 km up in 6 to 8 hours, then 23 km down in 7 to 8 hours, over stone scree to the ice-capped summit.
Very early in the morning, between midnight and 02:00, set off for the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers.
Head northwest through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek.
At Stella Point (5,685 m) you stop for a short rest, rewarded with a magnificent sunrise, weather permitting. From there you may meet snow all the way on the 1-hour climb to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and in Africa. Faster hikers see the sunrise from the summit.
From the summit, descend straight to the Mweka Hut campsite, stopping at Barafu for lunch. Mweka Camp is in the upper forest, and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon.
In the evening, enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep. Overnight at Mweka Camp.
After breakfast, continue down through the forest from Mweka Camp (3,100 m) to Mweka Gate (1,830 m): 15 km, about 5 hours. Lower down, the trail can be wet and muddy.
At the park gate you receive your summit certificate.
Our driver meets you at the gate and takes you back to a base hotel in Moshi for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, transfer back to Arusha town.
