Panoramica

Stone Town and its buildings are full of history and stories of the old times of Zanzibar, when sultans and Arabs, Europeans and Zanzibaris wrote the history of the island.

These four days follow the slave route from a hotel in Stone Town. A guide takes you through the town, from the Anglican Cathedral and the slave markets to the Palace of the Sultans. You take a boat to Prison Island and visit the slave caves and chambers at Mangapwani village.

  1. Giorno 1

    Arrival in Stone Town

    On arrival at the airport or the harbour, you are met and transferred to your hotel in Stone Town.

    Overnight in Stone Town, on a bed and breakfast basis.

  2. Giorno 2

    Stone Town tour and Prison Island

    After breakfast, set off on a tour of Stone Town. Your guide introduces you to all the buildings of interest and the famous viewpoints.

    Visit the Anglican Cathedral and the slave markets, the Palace of the Sultans, Tip Tip's House, the Old Arabic Fort, Forodhani Park and, of course, the famous Zanzibar doors in the town's little streets.

    Your guide shows you henna art and takes you to the fruit and vegetable market, on a walk through the long history of Zanzibar and its many rulers.

    Lunch is at the Archipelago restaurant, without drinks.

    At 15:00, leave by boat for Prison Island. It takes its name from the prison built there in 1893, though it was in fact used as a quarantine hospital. Today it is home to giant turtles.

    Dinner is at a local restaurant, then return to the hotel. Overnight in Stone Town.

  3. Giorno 3

    Mangapwani slave caves

    After breakfast, transfer to Mangapwani village and visit the slave caves and chambers.

    Lunch is at the Serena Mangapwani Restaurant, on the outskirts of Stone Town: a fresh seafood barbecue cooked by Serena's chefs, served in a series of traditional makuti bandas set into a lush hillside overlooking the beach.

    The atmosphere is informal and friendly.

    At additional cost, you can go fishing, snorkelling or kayaking, or take a catamaran ride, from the restaurant's watersports centre.

    Late in the afternoon, drive back to Stone Town. Overnight at the hotel in Stone Town.

  4. Giorno 4

    Departure

    After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight home.
